How does an agent use the free data?
The data is free. Access is never conditional on payment. Start at https://agentpaywire.com/api/index.json, https://agentpaywire.com/llms.txt, and https://agentpaywire.com/api/library.json. No account, API key, or Authorization header is required. JSON, Markdown, JSONL, CSV, and the feeds are the same public library.
What does a paid call add?
The library and its open data stay free for everyone. Paid API calls cover extra processing only, such as filtered change digests across protocols. Paid GET https://api.agentpaywire.com/v1/search, https://api.agentpaywire.com/v1/updates, https://api.agentpaywire.com/v1/digest, and https://api.agentpaywire.com/v1/changes each spend one credit. The free files and the free MCP list_changes tool do not.
How do I pay for the paid API?
Call the URL with no Authorization header. HTTP 402 returns WWW-Authenticate: L402 macaroon="<macaroon>", invoice="<bolt11>". Pay that BOLT11 invoice, then retry with Authorization: L402 <macaroon>:<preimage>. 100 sats buys 100 credits for 30 days. One credit is one paid request. Placeholders in angle brackets are not real credentials. Discovery: https://agentpaywire.com/.well-known/l402. L402: 100 sats for 100 credits over 30 days. x402: 0.01 USDC per request on Base, and no credits. Both are on the same paid routes. A 402 keeps the L402 challenge and adds PAYMENT-REQUIRED. Pay with Authorization: L402 <macaroon>:<preimage>, or send PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. A v1 client may send X-PAYMENT. Discovery: https://api.agentpaywire.com/.well-known/x402.
Does the API return HTTP 429?
The API does not rate-limit clients and does not return HTTP 429. A Lightning wallet rate limit becomes HTTP 503 with Retry-After. Error bodies are JSON with a string error field, except OPTIONS (204, empty) and a rate-limited deep health probe. The checklist is /trust.json.
What license covers the metadata?
