The machine-native economy: why AI agents need crypto payment rails

A note on BlackRock's paper dated 5 October 2026: agentic commerce requires machine-native payment rails; stablecoins are likely to lead; the ecosystem remains nascent.

On 5 October 2026, BlackRock published a paper by Robert Mitchnick, “The Machine-Native Economy: AI and Digital Assets.” This note uses only statements from that paper, quoted verbatim, plus a short list of public protocol pages. It does not add figures, forecasts, or recommendations.

What the paper states

The paper sets AI and digital assets side by side:

AI represents machine-native intelligence, while digital assets represent machine-native money.

It states the payment requirement in one sentence:

Agentic commerce requires machine-native payment rails.

On the kind of transaction those rails are described as fitting, the paper says:

Blockchain rails are particularly well suited to high-frequency, sub-cent machine-to-machine (M2M) transactions, including API calls, on-demand data, and consumption-based compute.

The paper describes x402 as:

an open payments protocol developed by Coinbase using the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status to facilitate machine-initiated payments

Stablecoins

On which instrument is likely to lead on those rails, the paper says:

stablecoins are likely to lead because they provide a reliable unit of account and greater predictability in pricing and settlement.

It gives one market figure, tied to a date:

The circulating market capitalization of stablecoins exceeded $300 billion as of September 2026

Limits the paper names

The same paper describes the present state of the market:

The ecosystem remains nascent, with agentic payment activity and compute-market liquidity still limited.
